Like any other season, winter has some specific hazards and concerns for our furry friends. For dogs, paw care is one of the issues for pet owners to be aware of. Snow, salt, sand, and ice can all hurt Fido’s sensitive paw pads. Read on for some winter paw care tips from a veterinarian.
One development that we’re happy to see is the emergence of pet-safe de-icing products. This is great news for Man’s Best Friend! Chemical de-icers can cause painful paw burns or abrasions. Plus, there’s also a chance of Fido ingesting dangerous chemicals by licking his feet.
Fresh snow is pretty, but it can also hide hazards, such as broken glass, sharp rocks, and even holes. Stick to safe paths and sidewalks.
Putting a thick mat outside the door Fido comes in and out through can help keep your furry buddy from tracking in ice, snow, and, come spring, mud. Bath mats are actually a good option for this, as they are super absorbent and machine washable.
FIdo’s skin can get dry, rough, and cracked in winter, just as ours can. Paw balm or wax can protect and moisturize his furry feet. You can also use Vaseline or coconut oil in a pinch.
Booties are of course a great way to protect Fido’s feet. Needless to say, these will only work if your canine buddy is agreeable to them. If you have a puppy, have little Fido get used to them now.
Many of our four-legged buddies have super cute tufts of fur growing between their toes. You may want to trim these back, especially in winter. They can collect snow and form ice balls, which are pretty uncomfortable for your pooch.
Be sure to keep your furry buddy’s nails clipped! Fido may have a hard time getting good traction if his nails are too long. If you’re nervous about cutting your pup’s claws yourself, as many people are, ask your vet to demonstrate. You can also just call us to schedule a peticure.
Slips and falls can be just as dangerous for dogs as they are for us. If you have areas that are particularly treacherous, such as steps, put stair mats down.
