Your Dog and Allergies

Did you know that dogs can have allergies? Just like people, Man’s Best Friend can become allergic to specific substances, and the resulting reactions can make him quite miserable! In this article, a Galloway, OH veterinarian discusses Fido’s allergies.

Signs Of Allergies In Dogs

Itchiness is one of the most common signs of allergies in our canine friends. Of course, fleas can also make Fido scratch, so be sure to keep up with your furry pal’s flea control products. Wheezing, snoring, burping, and sneezing are more symptoms of allergies in dogs. Allergies can cause skin and ear problems, as well as vomiting or diarrhea. Red, runny eyes and nasal discharge can also be signs of allergies in dogs.

Common Culprits

Dogs can be allergic to many different things. Trees, plants, pollen, mold, and dust can all cause allergic reactions in our canine friends. Some dogs are allergic to certain fumes, such as perfume or cigarette smoke, or specific materials, like rubber, for instance. Fido could even be allergic to something in your carpet fiber! Man’s Best Friend can also react to an ingredient in his doggy shampoo; fleabites; or even his dog food.

Treating Allergies

If you know or suspect that your furry pal has allergies, bring him to the vet for a proper diagnosis. Your vet will need to run some tests to identify exactly what is making your pooch react. For food allergies, your canine buddy may be put on a specific diet to help determine what is causing his reactions. Once Fido’s allergies have been pinpointed, you’ll be able to move on to discussing treatment. Treatment options will vary depending on the type and severity of your dog’s allergies, so this will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Home Care

There are some things you can do at home to keep your dog more comfortable. Frequent vacuuming and dusting will reduce the amount of dust and dander in the air, which can help considerably. Wash Fido’s bedding regularly in hot water, using an unscented detergent. If your pooch is allergic to pollen, you may want to wipe his paws down after his walks, as our canine buddies can pick up quite a bit of pollen just by frolicking in the yard.
